A pink triangle has been a symbol for the LGBT community, initially intended as a badge of shame, but later reclaimed as a positive symbol of self-identity.
Vancouver’s earliest pride protest was on August 1, 1973, when the Gay Alliance Toward Equality (GATE) held a picnic and art exhibit. Vancouver’s first pride parade took place in 1978.
Beginning in the late nineteenth century, members of the underground LGBTQ+ community in large cities
began to organize masquerade balls known as “drags” in defi ance of laws which banned individuals from wearing clothes associated with the opposite gender, and at which competitions and pageants were held.
